From First Cut...to Closure

Prontosan® enhances the experience and prolongs activity with no limit on contact time or application frequency. Most irrigation solutions require a thorough saline rinse after limited contact time halting the effect they may have.

Key Features

  • Prontosan® has an incredibly strong safety profile with no cytotoxicity to the host tissues.  There is no limit to contact or dwell time for Prontosan® and no limitation on application frequency.*
  • The Betaine surfactant plays two roles.  Surfactants help prevent bacterial attachment.  Surfactants can break open an existing biofilm.*
  • Polyhexanide (PHMB) has complete broad spectrum activity within the solution.*
  • Polyhexanide (PHMB) is completely stable and is not impaired in the presence of blood, proteins etc.. like Iodine etc...*
  • Polyhexanide (PHMB) has a strong tissue binding characteristic and a persistent remnant effect where activity will continue after initial exposure.*
  • Because a saline rinse is not required, the stability and persistent remnant effect allows Prontosan® to continue to do its job long after other solutions are washed away.
  • Prontosan® can be used intermittently through out the case and again before wound closure which allows the surgeon to stay on the Offense with infection control for the duration of the surgery.  This is why we say: “No Rinse, No Wait…Irrigate and Operate.”

2 Powerful Ingredients

Betaine (Surfactant)

Betaine (Surfactant)

Betaine (Surfactant)

Betaine (Surfactant) is a Surface Active Cleanser that Provides Immediate Debridement.*

  • Surfactants help to prevent bacteria from attaching to a surface aiding in the prevention of bacterial colonization & eventual biofilm formation.
  • Surfactants can detach adherent bacteria and break open existing biofilms exposing the underlying bacteria to external threat.

Polyhexanide (PHMB)

Betaine (Surfactant)

Betaine (Surfactant)

Polyhexanide (PHMB) has Broad Spectrum Activity Within the Solution Against Gram + Bacteria, Gram - Bacteria, Various Fungi and Viruses.

  • (Polyhexanide) PHMB has multiple complex modes-of-action
  • (Polyhexanide) PHMB remains stable and is not impaired under organic load, i.e. blood, proteins, etc..
  • Binds to tissue for a persistant remnant effect
  • Strong safety profile with no cytotoxicity to the host tissue
  • No Rinse Solution extending the mode-of-action of Prontosan® for a long lasting effect.

What About Biofilm?

Betaine (Surfactant)

Betaine (Surfactant)

Betaine (Surfactant)

The polar heads to the Betaine surfactant molecules have the same electric load and therefore repel each other.  This is how the biofilm is cracked.

Polyhexanide (PHMB)

Betaine (Surfactant)

Betaine (Surfactant)

After the Betaine has broken up the wall of the biofilm, the Polyhexanide PHMB (P) can subsequently enter the biofilm and performs adjuvant antimicrobial effect.
